"Doctors, lawyers, and engineers too,"
My teacher would often remind us,
"For such work you should yearn to do,
Besides accountants, and professors."
Being hardworking was what entailed,
For a bright future in life.
Anything less meant we have failed,
It's for success that we strive.
Being recognised, being respected,
In a profession that you choose,
Is the yardstick by which you're measured,
By which you win or lose.
So we strive for high distinctions,
For honours and gold medals,
For the highest of all qualifications,
And for lofty titles we struggle.
Being found among the wealthy,
And be seated among the elite.
Mingling with those in high society,
And with the powerful we meet.
At the end of this journey long and painful,
Another has yet to be run.
For through the years of being successful,
Being human has only begun.
Being human.
